Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary, pseudo-axillary or rarely interfoliar. Flowers bisexual (perfect); pedicellate, often drooping. Calyx pentagonal, deeply 5-lobed, the lobes sagittate at base, enlarged. Corolla actinomorphic, broadly campanulate, 5-lobed. Stamens 5, inserted at base of corolla, included; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, irregularly 3–5-celled; ovules numerous; stigma capitate, 3–5-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit an almost dry globose berry; splitting irregularly from base when ripe; enveloped in accrescent calyx lobes. Seeds numerous; brown; subdiscoid; seed coat reticulate; embryo curved around the endosperm.
